Is this a crankshaft position sensor?

No. A crankshaft position sensor (CKP) sits on the engine block near the pulley and reads a trigger wheel. This part mounts inside the distributor, which is camshaft-driven. The market calls it an ignition module, igniter or distributor Hall sensor; the manufacturer lists it as a crank angle sensor.

What is the difference between the sensor and the igniter?

The sensor outputs pulses and sets the spark timing; the igniter is the power switch that drives the ignition coil primary. On some part numbers both share one housing, so the unit replaces both and no separate igniter is needed. The configuration is listed in the specifications of each item.

How do I look up a part by J number or RSB code?

Accepted Answer

Give us the number stamped on the old unit — J885, J955, RSB-52 and so on — and we will name the matching TIS code. Without a number, the make, model, year and engine size are enough. The housing may also carry another maker's number (Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Mobiletron), which works for the search too.

How does a TIS code differ from an OEM number?

A TIS code is the manufacturer's own part number (TIS-201, for example). The OEM number belongs to the unit's original maker: J numbers are Mitsubishi, RSB codes are Hitachi. One TIS code can match several OEM numbers.

What are the signs of a faulty ignition module?

Main symptoms of a failing ignition module (commutator): the engine cranks but won't start because the spark disappears at the plugs; a warmed-up engine suddenly stalls a few minutes after starting; rough idle, misfiring and power loss; jerks and hesitation under acceleration. Spark that fades as the module heats up is a classic sign of a failed ignition module.

Why does a warm engine suddenly stall?

A common cause is an overheating ignition module: as it warms up it stops signalling the coil, the spark is lost and the engine stalls. Once it cools down the engine starts again, then the problem repeats. Check for spark at the plugs and replace the ignition module.
